Who Wants a Puppy?
8/9/2020
This time of distant socializing has made me realize that I do miss spending time with friends and family more than I thought. I'm generally fine staying home, and I often go for good lengths of time without much socialization, outside of my immediate family. Now, without much outside contact to speak of, I realize there are those who I truly do care for and miss, and the inability to see them right now makes my heart ache for them even more. My sister is one of these people. I've seen her for brief, distanced visits, outside either of our houses, usually one of us there to drop off some kind of food or other supplies. I started using my newfound time (or sleepless, insomniac time) to create some new artwork, portraits. Some of them are primarily digital, like the one of my sister, the first image below. I used a photo that I'd taken of her from some time ago, holding my little black Sabbeth, when she was just a pup. I wasn't too impressed with the original image. Sabbeth blended into the dark shadows and was looking away from the camera. I put the file away into the archives (I am definitely a digital hoarder... I don't throw anything away) and sort of forgot about it. Along came this challenge to use an outtake from a shoot that you'd never thought you'd use and make something new with it. So I searched, and came back with that image. I turned the puppy into a goby, mostly because I had an image of a goby that would work for the angle, and it was weird, so of course I liked it. Who wants a puppy, when they can have a goby?
I did some other digital overlay with older portraits. I also did some self-portraits with various flora growing around the yard. Some worked better than others, but it was a fun experiment. They definitely were the hardest to breath through of all the masks I've worn so far during the pandemic, but that might have been all the lotion I used to stick them to my face... (I couldn't figure out how else to make it work, and the lotion really did work, so...) I did learn that lamb's ear, which was supposedly a substitute for toilet paper, is very irritating to the skin, and unfortunately, stuck a leaf over my nose for quite some time. I can't imagine the world of hurt someone would be in if they rubbed their delicate nether regions with this furry leaf from itchy hell. But now I know. Definitely don't ever use it for toilet paper.
