People as Crystals...
3/24/2021
I wrote this around the new year, and meant to put it up here, and then promptly forgot... So here it is:
What did the year 2020 teach you?
This year, we learned about growing crystals. (Can you tell which ones we grew in this photo? Some of them are sugar crystals we grew at home...)
All crystals form from supersaturated solutions, with so many molecules packed inside the liquid, they eventually 'crystallize' out. This year I've realized that people are much more crystalline than I'd previously realized. We've had plenty of time to sit with ourselves this year, our energies building into this supersaturated environment surrounding us. While we may look similar on the outside, on the inside we might be made of entirely different components. We grow at different rates. It seems that the most prevalent aspects of our personalities have crystallized and grown into something much larger in this time we've spent with ourselves this year. Generosity and compassion bloomed to new levels, as did selfishness. I've realized that it is more important than ever to be cautious about who and what I let into my surrounding space, because, just like a crystal is made up of whatever minerals are suspended around it in its solution, we, too, are made up of the environment that surrounds us. We pick things up from our environment, and they are added to who we are, beneficial and malevolent.
Some crystals are sharp and jagged, and best to be avoided. Some are delicate and fragile and must be observed from a distance, or handled very carefully. Some are so beautiful and full of light that I just want to hold them close to my heart and listen to them sing.
This year has taught me to be ever grateful for what I have, and to appreciate those singing crystals in my life even more (and reminded me to let them know I appreciate them more often!).
Wishing you heart songs and bright days in the New Year!
With love and gratitude,
Emma
